26th Annual Student Research Conference

French for the Medical Professional
Kathryn Hogan
Dr. Patrick Lecaque, Faculty Mentor

The main purpose of my class, French for the Medical Professional, is twofold: to teach medical vocabulary used in France and to learn about the French healthcare system. The first half of the semester is focused on mastering basic French medical terminology, and the second half of the semester deals with the French healthcare system. During the first half of the semester, each week focuses on a different vocabulary lesson. I present the vocabulary to the students, and then design activities in which students can use the new vocabulary. During the second half of the semester, groups of students are assigned a chapter in the textbook to present and for which to create discussion questions. These presentations are followed by a class discussion, and at the end of the semester students will write a paper summarizing what they have learned about the French healthcare system.
