Aural Rehabilitation for the Geriatric Population
Jourdan K. Kruchowski * and Stephanie J. Simpson
Dr. Ilene Elmlinger, Faculty Mentor

Residents living in rural long term care facilities do not receive enough funding to provide aural rehabilitation programs. Unfortunately they are not educated on how to improve their communication abilities causing their needs to go unseen due to miscommunications with friends, family members, and workers in order to express their needs and wants. This presentation educates speech language pathologists on this underrepresented population and provides appropriate services. Professionals working in these facilities need to work together as a team. The first step is to inform the residents on improving their communication strategies especially if they have a hearing loss.
