Five Poems of Yehuda Amichai (Original Translation)
Eran Feintuch
Dr. Bob Mielke, Faculty Mentor
The late Yehuda Amichai (1924-2000) was Israel's premier poet and a major figure in world literature. His career, which spanned several decades, marked him as a true master of the poetic craft, gifted with the rare ability to express universal truths through highly accessible yet infinitely rich language. This project is an original translation of five of Amichai's poems from the original Hebrew to English. The translator will present his renditions of the poems, then examine his methodological approaches to the translation of poetry, expounding the particular challenges posed by Amichai's work. Finally, the translator will briefly discuss Amichai's role in contemporary Israeli and Middle Eastern literature, placing his work within the context of the region's millennia-old literary traditions.
