The Developmental Asset Framework, an evidence-based strategy to increase health protective factors, provides positive experiences for youth to counter negative health behaviors and influences. Individuals who lack many of the assets needed for overcoming adversity often encounter problems in other areas of their lives. Strengthening the 40 Developmental Assets in youth is an effective avenue to meet many of the Healthy People 2010 National Health Goals, including reduction of substance abuse, violence, and many other high-risk health behaviors. A root cause analysis of the 40 Developmental Assets Profile was conducted to examine the specific determinants of health behaviors in area youth. Strengths and concerns were then prioritized, and community-wide interventions were created or expanded to meet identified needs.
