Beethoven: Violin Sonata in D Major, Op. 12, No. 1
Nicole S. Moore
Dr. Sam McClure, Faculty Mentor
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was a great composer of both the Classical and Romantic eras. He composed his Violin Sonata in D Major during the earlier years of his career, as evidenced by the traditional forms and structures commonly used during the Classical era. At the time that it was published in 1798, critics contended that the piece was too complex, bizarre and weird for the public's taste. However, for the performer, the piece is deceptively simple in terms of its technical demands, but quite challenging musically and expressively.
