Plucked Off the Pavement: Thrice, Christianity, and Hardcore Punk
Michael A. Powell
Dr. James D'Agostino, Faculty Mentor
This paper analyzes the philosophical content of the songs written by Dustin Kensrue for his band, Thrice, in order to discuss the ways in which he combines Christian thought and metaphysics, punk ethics, and a wide variety of musical styles in increasingly sophisticated ways through the growth of the band. The two primary themes examined are the search for truth, and a more specifically applied discussion of his criticisms of exclusive behaviors in both the Christian and punk "scenes," including his incorporation of ideas from influential thinkers like Friedrich Nietzsche and C.S. Lewis in both areas.
