Crystal and 3-Dimensional Molecular Structures of Pesticides
Harrison M. Black
Dr. Russell G. Baughman, Faculty Mentor

Crystal and 3-dimensional molecular structures of selected pesticides were determined as a part of a summer undergraduate research program (STEP). The structures were determined to better understand structure and activity relationships. Two different herbicides and a pair of fungicides were examined. Fungicides observed were Thiophanate (Topsin E®) and Thiophanate-methyl (Topsin M®). Herbicides observed were Chloramben ethyl ester and Chlorbromuron (Maloran®). In each pesticide hydrogen bonding was observed and it is likely that those hydrogen bonds have an effect on the biological activity of the pesticide.
