Freud, Oedipus, and Lacan: A Critique on the Freudian Psychoanalysis of Oedipus the King
Courtney B. Schaefer
Dr. Hena Ahmad, Faculty Mentor

Sigmund Freud defines the Oedipus Complex as the son's desire to kill his father and marry his mother. This paper will examine Oedipus the King from the Freudian psychoanalytical viewpoint, as well as critique the Freudian theories derived from the ancient play. This paper will also explore whether Freud used his psychoanalysis as a critique of Sophocles' authorial intention, or if he merely used the character's name in order to make his theories more easily recognizable to his audience. Furthermore, the Freudian Oedipus complex will be examined through a Lacanian psychoanalytic lens.
