Rahab: An Opera
Deborah J. Pounds♦
Dr. Warren Gooch, Faculty Mentor
Opera is a genre of musical performance that is often overlooked by most Americans. This is an unfortunate situation, which this researcher and composer would like to see changed. The focus of discussion is a work-in-progress by the author, an opera entitled Rahab, based on the Biblical character from the book of Joshua. Rahab as a character is an appropriate subject for an opera, due to her interesting life, while the spies and their commander Joshua lend themselves toward strong supporting roles. The presentation will include a discussion of the opera libretto and compositional process employed. An excerpt from Rahab will also be performed.
