Physical Activity Implementation in Elementary Classrooms

Tressa Campbell
Dr. Julie Lochbaum and Dr. Bridget Thomas, Faculty Mentors

Physical activity in the school systems has been on a downturn due to a variety of forces including; standardized testing, cuts in funding, and overall academic focus in the school.  According to Dugger, Swartz, and Watson, implementation of this in the classroom can aid elementary-aged students’ overall health and academic performance.  The benefits of physical activity play more of a role than just physical health, but also mental health, social abilities, self-esteem, and prevention of diseases.  A variety of schools have tried their hand at the best way to implement physical activity in the classroom setting.  In recent years, implementations have included light exercise breaks in the classroom, standing desks, pedal desks, and incorporating movement into the curriculum. This study examines the multitude of benefits that comes from implementing physical activity in the classroom setting for a variety of different students and discovers the patterns that worked well for some schools.
