Impact of Environmental Enrichment on Weaning Stress in Calves

Weaning is considered to be one of the most stressful periods for cattle in their lifetime and can result in reduced growth and increased stress. The objective of this study was to reduce calf stress during the weaning process by adding environmental enrichment to the pen after weaning. The study was conducted at the Truman State University farm, and after weaning, 11 treatment group calves were given environmental enrichment and 11 control group calves did not receive environmental enrichment. Calf growth, activity, and eye temperature (as an indicator of stress) were measured before and after weaning. Results will be presented at the Student Research Conference.
