Whiteboarding: Cooperative Learning In a Mathematics Classroom

Elliott Leong♦
Dr. Christopher Maglio, Faculty Mentor

Whiteboarding is a cooperative learning technique that is most often used in physics classrooms. The goal of this model is to help students develop social skills, more positive attitude towards the subject, and greater academic achievement. Mathematics is typically considered a difficult and individual subject to many high school students, and the traditional model of direct instruction or lecture is not as effective compared to cooperative learning according to research. The purpose of my action research is to determine whether this model, when applied to a rural high school in northeastern Missouri, produces better social skills, more positive attitude towards mathematics, and greater academic achievement in mathematics.
