Correlation between One Repetition Maximum Dumbbell Bench Press and Throwing Speed in Softball Players

Throwing velocity is perceived as a major factor for successful performance in college softball players. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential of maximum dumbbell pressing strength of the dominant arm to predict overhand throwing velocity in women softball players. Varsity softball players (n = 14) were evaluated for dominant arm one-repetition maximum (1RM) dumbbell press. On a separate day, over-hand throwing velocity was determined with a radar gun from the better of two trials. Height and weight were not significantly related to throwing velocity. 1RM strength had a significant but moderate correlation with throwing velocity (r = 0.57), which accounted for only 32% of the common variance between the two tests. The pressing movement of the shoulder may have limited potential for estimating overhand throwing velocity. Alternative strength testing using an isokinetic shoulder flexion motion might yield more definitive results for predicting throwing velocity.
