Formal Analysis and Performance of Paul Chihara's String Trio

Adam Barker*, Tommaso Bruno♦, and Samuel Tillman
Dr. Sam McClure, Faculty Mentor

The main focus of our research is the first movement of Paul Chihara’s String Trio. In particular, we have sought to identify melodic and motivic relations throughout the piece, as well as the recurrence of specific pitch sets and chords. We will also provide a structural interpretation of the movement, trying to place every different section within the formal context of the piece.

We will be performing the entire trio in front of the composer himself at the beginning of April. This experience will be quite informative, and his feedback will provide us with a more clear and analytical idea of the piece, leading to a more convincing and proper interpretation of it.
