Dr. Christopher Maglio, Faculty Mentor

Previous research shows that mathematics holds trepidation for many people, this is problematic due to growth in STEM jobs. Teachers are tasked with finding ways to increase student enjoyment of math. This study was designed to investigate the impact of differentiation on student enjoyment of mathematics. It was conducted in a rural Missouri elementary school, participants were 14 second graders. Students took an anonymous pre-questionnaire with a 4-point Likert scale. After four weeks of using choice menus students took a post-questionnaire. Results were analyzed using: mean, median, standard deviation, and percent change. A t-test was conducted by question demonstrating a statistically significant increase of overall student feelings towards math after choice menu implementation. Student enjoyment of mathematics did increase.
