Regional Trade Agreements and Bilateral Trade Flows
Nicholas M. Wehner
Dr. John Quinn, Faculty Mentor

The importance of economic globalization to our world cannot be overstated; it affects stock markets, international coalitions, merchandise and energy consumption, research and development, and many other aspects that have significant impacts (whether direct or indirect) upon our daily life. A consequence of economic globalization is the creation of regional trade agreements (RTAs), which attempt to regulate international trade through bilateral or multilateral agreements to temper the intense influence of globalization. Counterintuitively, RTAs are not always enacted with the intent of increasing bilateral trade flows, but rather for strategic diplomatic or political ends. Thus, this research paper proposes a quantitative methodology to isolate the role RTAs play in affecting trade flows. The proposed methodology acts as a basic framework from which other trade research may be extrapolated.
