The Domestic Soldier: World War II and the Experiences of Soldiers on the Homefront

The Second World War is known as the ?good war,? the time in our history when the best of the best from the US went overseas to fight the most evil force we had ever faced. And while there is truth to this view, it is not the whole truth. While heroes fought abroad, there were also countless dutiful people who never made it overseas, soldiers who answered the call to serve only to be put on mess-hall duty, assembling aircraft, testing weapons, and training other soldiers. The soldiers on the Homefront may not have movies made about their lives, but their impact on the war was substantial. Letters sent home and secondary sources recounting operations of the Homefront help us learn about the accomplishments and courage of soldiers who stayed stateside during World War II.
