Noise Exposure and Temporary Threshold Shift
Michelle P. Goedeker* and Jordan A. Ganter
Dr. Ilene Elmlinger, Faculty Mentor

A Temporary Threshold Shift (TTS) is defined as a decrease in hearing sensitivity that occurs after loud noise exposure and can be evident up to 16-48 hours following the exposure. The purpose of our project is to determine the possible effects of noise exposure secondary to attendance at a typical college student venue. The phenomenon of TTS will be specifically examined to determine the average duration of an individual's experience following exposure to high decibel levels. Further, this study aims to collect more information about the college-aged population?s use of hearing protection and evaluate effectiveness of provided ear protection. In addition to providing insight into the recognition and prevention of hearing disorders in a common setting, this study aims to educate participants on the importance of hearing protection in high-decibel environments. In this endeavor, we will also collect information on the population?s voluntary use of hearing protection when made available.
