Paule Maurice and the Tableaux de Provence
Lindsey A. Davis
Dr. Marc Rice, Faculty Mentor

In the 1950's, music was still predominantly a man's field in most parts of the world. In France, however, the gender roles were not as confined, and many women were able to pursue professional careers. Paule Maurice challenged the gender boundaries in France. A professor of music, Maurice worked alongside her husband, allowing her to spend a majority of her time composing and collaborating with her colleagues. Maurice's most famous concerto is the Tableaux de Provence. The piece, a result of her work alongside French saxophone pioneer Marcel Mule has become a staple of the French saxophone style due to its complex and musically diverse passages that reflect the programmatic titles of each movement. Each movement is a different picture of various scenes she witnessed while exploring Provence, France, and the compositional techniques utilized by Maurice bring each of these scenes to life.
