GROW Internship to Maison de Naissance
Emily J. Schepers* and Emma Flowers
Dr. Lin Twining, Faculty Mentor
In the summer of 2012, six students from Truman State University traveled to Torbeck, Haiti to work with a local birthing clinic, Maison de Naissance (MN), within their zone of service. Maison de Naissance offers free maternal and infant health care services to their surrounding community. The students worked with local translators and community health workers to conduct a survey to see the impact the birthing clinic has had on the area. The survey addressed several different aspects ranging from estimated transportation time and cost to MN, their preference for MN over the local hospital, and their childrens current vaccination status. The students provided basic statistical analysis to identify general trends and will share the reports with MN so they can make appropriate adjustments to increase their influence on the community. This work has helped MN to serve their community and become a player for global health equity.
