Exiles of Erin: The Effects of Irish Immigration into St. Louis in the 19th Century
Caitlin M. O'Leary
Dr. David Robinson and Dr. Jeff Gall, Faculty Mentors
The massive wave of immigration into the United States from Ireland during the 19th century is well known. Chicago, Boston, and New York City, in particular, were flooded with these exiles of Erin; however, it is often overlooked that St. Louis, Missouri, was an Irish hot spot as well. This research focuses on a few key questions: What was the appeal of St. Louis to the Irish immigrants? How easy or difficult was it for the Irish to be accepted into society in St. Louis? What types of work and careers did the Irish pursue in St. Louis? How did the Irish who immigrated into St. Louis affect the economy of the city? Did they help it or hinder it?
