Effect of Rubrics on Poetry Writing

The purpose of this study was to examine how the clarity and creativity of student poetry writing is affected by rubric use. The research was conducted during a month-long poetry unit in a secondary Creative Writing class. Throughout the unit students were assigned poems without the use of a rubric, with a six-traits writing rubric designed for poetry, and with individualized rubrics designed to develop poem clarity and creativity. Students were also asked to self-evaluate their own poems specifically focusing on clarity and creativity. When the unit was completed, student poems were compared from throughout the unit and student self-evaluations were assessed to see how each student believed his or her creativity and clarity had been affected. Analysis showed that rubrics more directed at clarity and creativity seemed to spur more like traits in the poetry.
