How Does Socioeconomic Status Affect Students' Achievement In Mathematics

Abstract The purpose of this action research was to investigate the affect of socioeconomic status on students' achievement in mathematics. This study included 9th through 12th graders whose ages ranged from 13 years to 18 years old. These participants engaged in the study during mathematics class for eight weeks. Participants were grouped into two different groups determined by their participation in the free or reduced lunch program. Students were then evaluated based on a variety of criteria including overall grades, incomplete homework assignments, and number of days engaged. At the conclusion of the study, it was found that socioeconomic status negatively affects students' achievement in the mathematics classroom.
