Gender Performance Difference in New York Marathon
Haley M. Downing* and Abigail M. Palm
Dr. James A. Padfield, Faculty Mentor
Previous research has documented that there is a small but significant decrease in performance times between elite male and female marathoners. However, the relationship between the performance times of non-elite male and female marathoners has not been investigated. This study seeks to determine if the same relationship exists between male and female non-elite marathoners. Quartiles (a sample of ten) were identified at 1% (winner), 25%, 50%, and 75% of the total participants for each gender over 10 years of the New York Marathon. The data shows that the gender difference tends to increase as the performance time increases.
