The Effect of Education on Willingness to Use Hearing Protection

The purpose of the research project was to determine the effect of education on willingness of music and agricultural science students to use hearing protection. The researchers hoped to ascertain whether the subjects would be more likely to wear hearing protection in harmful noise environments after being educated about how the ear works, what environments are harmful to hearing, and what hearing protection options are available. To obtain these outcome measurements, subjects were given a 10 question survey assessing their current knowledge of hearing function, harmful noise environments, and hearing protection options. Following this initial survey, the researchers gave a presentation covering these three topics. Two weeks later, the subjects took the same survey. The researchers looked to see what changes were made following the educational presentation. The researchers anticipated increased willingness to use hearing protection in harmful noise environments after being well-informed.
