Mitch A. Stewart*, Taylor Parkinson, Kaitlyn McManus, Cassandra Hester, Madeline Cummings, and Katherine Hawatmeh
Dr. Carol Cox, Faculty Mentor
With major patient safety problems in todays healthcare system, there is a call for improvement in the training of healthcare professionals. Gammans participated as health educators on a healthcare team in a new, inter-professional, clinical education program that focused on interdisciplinary communication between pre-professional health profession students and team-based case presentations of their patient visits. Pre-professional health educators learned how to demonstrate professionalism when working with a patient and interacting with a team. Gammans practiced serving as an interprofessional team member by providing health education information to improve patients wellness. By conducting a physical examination and taking vital signs, Gammans had the opportunity to strengthen their clinical skills. With a health educator on an interprofessional healthcare team, patients have the potential for improved health because of the information and resources on prevention and wellness health educators can give to them.
