Workplace violence prevention workshops for employees: A pilot program
Cody Campbell* and Taylor Parkinson
Dr. Carol Cox and Dr. Joseph Visker, Faculty Mentors
After training as workplace violence prevention instructors, hour-long workplace violence prevention workshops were taught by Gammans for campus and community employee groups. Participants mean workplace violence prevention knowledge quiz scores significantly (p<.05) increased pre- to post- workshop, but most participants were still at some risk of violent acts due to their work environment (easy, multiple access points for aggressors, insufficient staffing, and working alone) as evidenced by a post-workshop checklist. Close to half of respondents, though, reported that employees have not received training in how to deal with aggressive clients. By working together on trainings like this one, employers and employees can take steps to prevent violence in the workplace. More workshops such as these are recommended because even with adequate environmental controls, no workplace is immune to violence.
