Decolonization of the Mind: An Important Drive in Black Nationalism
Babajide Adio
Dr. Bob Mielke, Faculty Mentor

Decolonization of the mind was a key concept that facilitated the emergence of Black Nationalism in America. This paper focuses on the introduction of "Double Consciousness" by W.E.B. Du Bois as a problem African-Americans faced at the end of slavery. Frantz Fanon responded to this idea of "Double Consciousness" by introducing the concept of colonization of the mind in Africans. A personal narrative interweaves this concept into the paper. Despite having different agendas, the likes of Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, and Ngugi wa Thiong'o built on the concepts of Du Bois and Fanon to push for Black Nationalism and Separatism.
