Ashley M. Adams
Dr. Hena Ahmad, Faculty Mentor

In Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children, children born on midnight, August 15th 1947 share an ability to understand all the languages of the country. As India moves towards independence, this special bond emphasizes the importance and implications of a national language distinct from the trade language (English) imposed on the people by Great Britain. In this paper, I will examine the influence of language on identity by specifically contrasting the external homogenous language of British colonization with the internal diversity of languages in India.
