Stereotypically, the use of a potter's wheel is for making vessels and functional objects to be used around the home. Throwing a vessel is a very interesting and challenging process. The variety of shapes, however, is limiting as only cylinder-based objects can be thrown. These objects generally hold the same characteristics: a smooth, well thought-out silhouette and continuous, defined edges. My pieces consist of closed, porcelain vessels with carved surface design. I am interested in keeping the smooth silhouette and defined edges, but applying them to non-functional thrown forms, suggesting function through these non-utilitarian vessels, and exploring more formal considerations of surface and negative space.
