A Historical Perspective on Music and Emotions
Chase A. Carlisle
Dr. Warren Gooch, Faculty Mentor

Throughout history, music has played an important role in defining the emotional, psychological and spiritual aspects of what it means to be an individual and a community. The importance of the relationship between music and these aspects has been examined and even codified by some current and historical world cultures. The ancient Greek views on modes and the Baroque doctrine of affections are examples of this. The presentation will discuss some of the more significant findings of various historical world cultures and will conclude with an overview of present research in the field.
