The Secret Life of Alban Berg: Understanding Berg's Music Through his Life
Jennifer A. Tullmann
Dr. Marc Rice, Faculty Mentor

My goal in writing a research paper on Alban Berg's first opera, Lulu, is to analyze the historical context in which the work was written and then apply that knowledge to the music and construction of the opera. My approach is to explore influences such as Berg's relationship with his family, the impact that previous productions of the Lulu plays had on Berg's interpretation of the plays, and the secretive nature of Berg's personal life. I hope to apply these insights to the specific twelve-tone musical construction of the opera, as well as Berg's literary adaptation of the Lulu plays. My final objective in presenting my research is to share my passion for the music of Berg with others and to open the reader's eyes as to how influential a composer's environment and life is on their music.
