Too Good for Drugs (TGFD) was designed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) as a model school-based substance abuse prevention program. TGFD was created to strengthen character, values, and enhance coping skills to negative peer pressure and use of alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs. The program involves classroom discussions, exercises on building skills, and structured activities including role-play. Members of Truman State University's Eta Sigma Gamma chapter, a national professional health science honorary, were part of a school-community prevention coalition that implemented TGFD in an area elementary after-school program. The coalition members also performed pre- and post-tests to assess knowledge gained. No significant differences were shown after the program for attitude change or intention to use drugs. Students did, however, demonstrate a significant difference following the program in knowledge of the negative consequences of drugs.
