Hijack the Frequencies: The Zapatista Movement and its Music

On January 1, 1994, the Zapatista movement which was made up of Mexico's displaced indigenous farmers exploded on to the international scene. In protest of NAFTA and the reclamation of their land by the Mexican government, the Zapatistas let the world know that they had had enough. What is unique about the Zapatista movement is their use of pirated and makeshift radio stations to broadcast underground and propagate their cause. Similarly, they have been successful at gaining international solidarity through utilization of the internet by creating numerous websites dedicated to informing the masses. Understanding the Zapatistas' accomplishments, national and global, and the music that has arisen from and about the movement is integral to understanding where the Zapatista movement came from and what will become of it as it continues its fight today.
