A Comparative Look at Elementary Mathematics Education

For the last several decades, researchers have scrutinized American education to determine its merits and shortcomings. Public education is a fundamental institution in the United States as its quality directly affects the quality of the nation, forming a foundation for economic and political success. Because of these implications for future achievement, education in the United States has the principal goal of inculcating students with a thorough understanding of academic and social knowledge, beginning at a young age. Current research shows that public education has, in many places, failed to meet these goals. American students are often outpaced internationally at the high school level. Little research has focused exclusively on primary school quality. In this study I will focus specifically on elementary mathematics, applying quantitative methodology to several variables to investigate the effects of those variables on primary mathematics education.
