Success Indicators of African American Achievement

A key issue in education currently is the "achievement gap"--that is, the gap between African-American and white achievement. The purpose of this project is to study the academic success of two high-achieving African American 6th grade students. Through observing, recorded interviews, and a survey from the national research of Dr. Ron Ferguson of Harvard, the students and I worked to identify what factors, both at school and outside of school, contribute to their success. By comparing the students' data with Dr. Ferguson's data, I sought to discover the consistencies between these two students and the African-American population at the same middle school, hoping to discover and articulate the implications for classroom teachers regarding the achievement gap.
