"We’re just poems, we are 90% metaphor": Sexual Politics in the Works of Sappho and Ani DiFranco

Through a comparative study of the works of Archaic Greek poet Sappho and contemporary American folksinger Ani DiFranco one may better understand sexual politics as a global and transhistorical movement. I use historical and literary analysis, with an emphasis on gender theory to look at the themes and underlying politics in both Sappho and DiFranco’s lyrics; I apply Kate Millet’s theory of sexual politics. Through the application of Millet’s theory I come to the conclusion that by analyzing literary sources from varying periods in history the evolution of sexual politics can be traced as a pancultural movement.
