A Christian Story: Madeleine L'Engle's A Swiftly Tilting Planet

Adolescence is perhaps the most confusing and crucial time in a person's life; as children entering adulthood, adolescents are confronted with life-changing questions regarding the world and their rightful place in it. Many seek guidance from the books they read. In the A Wrinkle In Time series, gifted author Madeleine L'Engle addresses such critical issues as identity, purpose, values, and beliefs with resounding clarity and beautiful prose. Throughout the story, L'Engle uses realistic characters with simplified aspects to illustrate to youth the Christian virtues of joy, faith, and love for one another. This paper examines A Swiftly Tilting Planet, the third novel of the series, and how these techniques are used to support the overarching theme of loving sacrifice and the ability to overcome extreme hardship to serve goodness.
