"Who in the World am I?" Examining Personality in Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass

Sigmund Freud defines an unstable sense of self as a core issue seen often in the human mind. This paper, through that Freudian lens, will examine the ways in which Alice, in Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, suffers a lack of identity in an incomprehensible world, represented in this case by "Wonderland." Furthermore, continuing to draw on Freudian analysis, this paper will show how Alice, still vulnerable to uncertainty as she grows, solidifies her sense of self in Carroll's sequel Through the Looking-Glass.
