Investigating Sun Protection Behaviors and Knowledge Among Truman State University Students

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the US with nearly one million new cases occurring each year. Skin cancer incidence is increasing particularly among young adults in the US. Many college students are unaware of the damaging effects of sun exposure. For these reasons, the purpose of this study is to increase awareness of skin cancer prevention and encourage sun safety among Truman State University students. Sun protection presentations will be given to students during spring semester 2006. Students’ sun protection knowledge and behaviors will be evaluated through a 15-question pre/post-test survey. The data collected will be analyzed using SPSS to determine any significant trends. Results of this study will be used to facilitate needed health education awareness to reduce unnecessary exposure to ultraviolet radiation.
