Surveys conducted across the nation consistently document high levels of stress among college students. This is associated with both short and long-term health and academic consequences. In order to increase awareness about the negative effects of stress and facilitate positive mental health among Truman students, the Student Public Health Association instituted “Stress-free Fridays.” Each event featured a “random act of kindness” such as free cookies, popcorn, a piñata, or puppies to pet. The peer education associated with these treats included stress statistics, positive coping skills, and enhanced stress management. The growing popularity of these events has enhanced our ability to raise awareness among harder-to-reach students.
