Analyzing Schuyler County Through the Use of the Health Field Concept

The purpose of this study was to investigate the elements of the Health Field Concept (human biology, environment, lifestyle, and health care) on the residents of Schuyler County, Missouri. Data was collected from numerous websites and interviews with five local health professionals. The county profile is: 4,170 residents, 96.9% Caucasian population, average income of $28, 861, with cancer as the leading cause of death. Surveyed residents list their major concerns as tobacco use, underage drinking, and illegal drug use. There is no hospital in Schuyler County, just a medical practice and physician in Lancaster. On-farm dumping was the only environmental concern; air quality is excellent. Local service needs include health screenings, immunizations for children, health education, and support groups. Low income and lack of access to health care in this rural county increase the prevalence of local health problems.
