Origin of GEMS-0067, a High Amylose Corn Variety Developed at Truman and Current Line Development From It.

Over the past ten years an inbred line now known as GEMS-0067 was developed at Truman State University and possesses starch having an amylose content of greater than 70%. The material was derived from exotic maize germplasm originally collected in Guatemala. The material is homozygous for the amylose-extender allele (ae) and posses the high amylose modifier of unknown number of genes and unknown gene action. We are in the process of creating a diverse collection of inbred lines for eventual crossing to produce experimental hybrids. We currently are analyzing progeny ears in the lab in order to identify grain samples that have the ae allele and modifiers fixed. We will report on the number and frequency of identified ears and describe eventual yield evaluation efforts.
