Synthesis of Lead Tris-(2-pyridylmethyl) Amine Chloride

As part of a continuing study of Pb2+ coordination chemistry with TPA, tris-(2-pyridylmethyl) amine, two new compounds have been synthesized. Compound (I), μ-Cl 3[Pb(TPA)]2Clx(OH)y ∙ zH2O, is a dimer with three bridging chlorides and exhibits mirror symmetry. The partial occupancy of the Cl- not bound to the Pb2+ in the X-ray crystal structure indicates that (I) is a non-stoichiometric compound. Compound (II), Pb6(TPA)4Cl12, contains a square pyramidal “PbCl5” structural unit where the Pb2+ sits nearly in the basal plane of the square pyramid. This is unexpected on the basis of VSEPR Theory, which predicts that the Pb2+ lone pair should manifest itself by a distortion of the structure leading to the Pb2+ sitting below the basal plane of the square pyramid.
