The History of Famous Clarinetists and Competition Pieces of the Solo de Concours

The famous Solo de Concours competition consists of students memorizing the required solo and attempting to win a Premier Prix (First Prize) within a time period of five years or before turning the maximum age limit at the Paris National Conservatory. In many cases, composers were commissioned to write pieces specifically for the competition. My presentation will explore the history behind the annual clarinet Solo de Concours competition. I will discuss the famous winners and the solos they played, including Widor's "Introduction et Rondo," Gaubert's "Fantaisie," and Tomasi's "Concerto for Clarinet." I will also discuss some of the similarities of the contest pieces and perform excerpts of them on my clarinet.
