Liberty is Not Free: The Fight Between Capitalism and Individual Beliefs in La conquista del aire and its Film Adaptation Las razones de mis amigos

Leah D. Anderson-Little
Dr. Stacy Davis, Faculty Mentor

In her book La conquista del aire (1998), Spanish author Belén Gopegui presents money as a manipulative force in life through the story of three friends and the destruction of their relationships due to a financial loan. In this novel Gopegui exhibits her harsh criticism of the role money plays in daily life, especially in western democracies such as Spain. The economic theme of the book reflects the impact of the Spanish economic recession in the nineties, and how financial changes influence the mentality of people. The film adaptation of the book, Las razones de mis amigos (2000), also investigates the role of money in life with an emphasis on the relationships of the characters instead of their individual experiences. This project analyzes the criticism of capitalism in the novel and in the movie, with a focus on the historical context of Spain and the political beliefs of the characters.
