Socialization, the “False Self”, and Emotional Labor in Early Childhood Educators

Emily N. Anderson
Dr. Brian Ott and Dr. Anton Daughters, Faculty Mentors

Early Childhood Educators spend most of their days guiding young children through the beginning of their careers as students. There is a need to explain the effects of the education field on Early Childhood Educators specifically, due to the unique nature of the profession. There is a lack of understanding in how Early Childhood Educators shift between their work selves and their non-work selves, as well as how well they separate, if they do, home lives and work. This is a profession and lifestyle in which the potential effects are not fully understood. These workers engage primarily with young children throughout the work day and experience low levels of adult interaction. This research examines semi-structured interviews with Early Childhood Educators within the Adair County, Missouri area. This research examines the unique experience of being an early childhood educator, and the correlation between this experience and potentially high levels of stress.
