The Impact of the Energy Sector on the Financial Markets of BRICS Countries.

Felipe B. Campos
Prof. Charles Boughton, Faculty Mentor

This research paper plans on examining the relationship between economic growth, as well as financial markets, of the emerging countries that compose the economic bloc known as BRICS, and their expanding energy sector.

Some economists believe that by 2050 these countries will be responsible for half of the world’s GDP, being dominant in the supply of manufactured goods, services, and raw materials. Although the BRICS form a very heterogeneous group, their growth has been caused by some similarities such as cheap labor and production costs, and a huge focus on the energy sector, especially oil and natural gas.

This study wants to understand the connection and importance of the energy sector with the growth of these countries. There might be a case that these countries are heavily dependent on the energy sector, so any volatility in prices can affect currency exchange rates and financial markets as a whole.
