Utilizing Sports to Impact Definitions of Literature

"Homerun!" "Goal!" "Touchdown!" "Score!" These exclamations are heard on fields, courts, rinks, and other sports settings. Rarely are they heard in the secondary English classroom. However, teachers must bring student interests into the classroom in order to make their learning worthwhile, applicable, and fascinating. In this case study, I examined the use of sports literature in the classroom to garner student interest for the purpose of better understanding the world of literature. In order to discover the effectiveness of this topic, my study includes field notes which records student responses and reactions to the topic of my study, reflective journals which illustrate students? thoughts and reactions, and a variety of student artifacts. When teachers can capture students? interests in the classrooms, more doors to learning are opened.
