Motivations and challenges of the Congolese Immigrant Community in Kirksville, MO and Surrounding Areas: An Ethnographic Study
Emily Thompson
Dr. Sana Camara, Faculty Mentor

This paper focuses on a study conducted through interviews on individuals who have immigrated from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the United States and now currently live in the city of Kirksville, Missouri. The main purpose of this study was to discover motivations the members of the Congolese community in Kirksville had for immigrating to the United States as well as the challenges they have faced since immigrating. The recent political unrest and economic struggle in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has led to many individuals immigrating to the United States and other developed countries to create a better life for themselves or their families. Unfortunately, many of those immigrating to Kirksville have acquired little to no English prior to their arrival to the United States which has greatly limited their ability to integrate into the population in which they have been placed.
